What is a Vote Aye/Nay?

The process of expressing agreement (aye) or disagreement (nay) with a motion, usually done through a formal vote. The terms are derived from older English terminology used in traditional parliamentary procedure. “Aye” comes from the Middle English word for “ay,” meaning “yes,” while “nay” comes from the Old English word “naega,” meaning “no.”
